Irem: My First Week in Barcelona

This is just the beginning of my four-week stay in Barcelona, but already the city has made a strong impression on me. There’s something truly magical about being here – the energy, the atmosphere, and the sense of freedom that comes with living in a place so full of life.

The first day was very chaotic because we couldn’t check in to our accommodation, so we had to stay in a hotel for one night. The next day was the big day – but it didn’t start so well. One of the girls’ suitcases broke, which made it hard to transport. When we finally arrived at our main accommodation, we found out that other people had also booked the same place. As a result, they gave us a better apartment – with a view of La Sagrada Família!

One of the things I love most so far is the view from where I’m staying. I can see La Sagrada Família from the balcony, and it never gets old. Every time I glance at it, I’m reminded of how unique and inspiring this city is.

In just a few days, I’ve already started to explore Barcelona. I’ve wandered through charming neighborhoods, admired street art, and discovered quiet spots in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. There’s always something happening, and the city invites you to keep moving and discovering.

During the weekdays, I’ve started working at a local dance school. It wasn’t a great start, but the people are very nice and friendly. At work, they don’t really know what we can do – they give us a task, and once we finish it, there’s often nothing left to do. So we just sit around and do other things for ourselves – for example, writing this blog. Even though I’m behind the scenes, it’s been interesting to see how much work goes into running a school like this.

Outside of work, one of the highlights so far has definitely been the beach. My friends and I have spent time enjoying the sun, swimming in the sea, and just relaxing with the sound of the waves in the background – and the voices of the beach vendors, shouting things like “Hello, Mojito!” It’s the perfect way to unwind after a busy day.

Even though it’s only been a week, I’ve already had a small taste of what it’s like to live and work in Barcelona. The work culture is different – more relaxed in some ways, but also very dedicated. It’s fascinating to see how people here approach their daily routines. The subway I take to get to work is always insanely full, which makes it a bit challenging for me.

Most of all, I’m beginning to experience what it means to be truly independent. Managing life in a new country, taking care of responsibilities, and making decisions on my own has been a valuable part of this journey. I know there’s still so much more to come, and I’m excited for what the next three weeks will bring.
