Since arriving in Spain, we have watched every single World Cup match. Football fever was everywhere, and we did not want to miss a moment of the tournament. Last Sunday, the excitement reached its peak when we went to the public viewing at Platja del Fòrum in Barcelona to watch the final together with thousands of other fans.
The atmosphere was incredible from the very beginning. Everyone was cheering, singing, and celebrating together. When Spain won the final, the crowd erupted with joy. We were all happy about Spain’s victory - except for Stefan, who was supporting Argentina and therefore a little bit depressed about the result.
After the match, it was easy to imagine what would happen next: thousands of people wanted to get home at the same time. Public transport was not really an option for us, so we decided to walk all the way home instead.
During our walk, the celebrations continued everywhere. We saw football fans on every street, waving flags and celebrating the victory. Car horns could be heard constantly, and the city was full of energy. Even though the walk was quite long, it was a unique experience to be part of such a special night in Barcelona.
It was definitely one of the highlights of our Erasmus+ stay and a memory we will not forget anytime soon. Thinking about leaving this city already makes me sick.
