Omid S: One Month, Countless Memories.
Aktualisiert: 8. Aug.
"I’ll do that another day." That sentence snapped right out of me after getting to Barcelona. Writing my first blog shocked me with the realization that one month isn’t nearly that long. So I set myself one simple rule: Don’t waste an afternoon.
From that point onwards, every day had a plan. After work, which was at 3:00 p.m., I hurried back to my accommodation to change (you know it’s probably not the best to be walking around Barcelona in your hotel clothes 😄), got something to eat, and went back outside. Returning to my room felt almost like losing a piece of the day, since there was still so much to do.
On some afternoons I swam in the sea, played beach volleyball or just chilled at the beach, and on others I went to places like Park Güell, Camp Nou and Montjuïc. From all experiences I have to say I really liked the breathtaking view from Montjuïc. At some point Google Maps stopped playing a role in my life. I started to handle my way around the old town without having to check my phone every five minutes, which made me feel a bit like a local.
On one Sunday I thought, "Let's go to the Costa Brava!" and booked a train to Blanes... on my own. To save a few euros, I decided to walk from the station instead of taking the bus. A few minutes later I heard Google Maps speaking German through a Bluetooth speaker. That's how I met a group of seven German students, and we quickly realised that we were all walking for the same reason, to save money, and were headed for the same beach. We ended up spending the whole day together, and what began as a random walk became one of my favourite memories.
But there was still nothing like the World Cup final.
It was amazing watching Spain play Argentina on a huge screen at the beach in Maresme with around 8,000 people. Before kick-off, people were already excited. After the final whistle, everyone in the city went crazy. People sang, yelled, honked their car horns and partied until late at night. Being in Spain when the Spanish team won the World Cup after 16 years made everything even more amazing. The weird thing is that I only realised a few days later what I had actually seen. That's a story I'll be telling forever.
Looking back, I'll miss the people, the culture and the feeling that every day had something new to offer. Barcelona gave me memories I'll never forget.
