Julia S: My Impressions of Malta

During my internship in Malta, I’ve had the chance to experience a completely new culture, and I have to say — it has been quite an adventure. My overall impression of Malta is that it’s a fascinating and very unique place.

One thing that surprised me at first was how often people here shoot fireworks. It seems like there’s always something being celebrated! At the beginning, I thought it was just a random thing, but then I learned that we’re actually here during one of the festive months, when many religious celebrations take place. Everywhere you look, there are colourful garlands, flags, and statues of saints decorating the streets.

In general, the Maltese are very religious — there are over 300 churches on this small island, which I found quite impressive. In the last few days, there was a festival in the town where we live. Children were singing on stage and people gathered to eat together.

My personal highlight was the marching band that passed right in front of our accommodation which was quite a fun moment.

All in all, we had a great time here, and I would definitely recommend this kind of trip to anyone. Still, I have to admit — I’m slowly happy to go back home. It’s simply too hot for me here! I’m not used to these temperatures at all. The only relief came when the wind was blowing, but that wasn’t always the case. And during our entire stay, it didn’t rain even once.
