Jana: A candlelight evening without electricity

This week brought a bit of an unexpected twist to our stay in Malta. We had a power outage that turned our evening into a rather unique experience.

It all started in the early afternoon, when the electricity in our apartment suddenly went out. At first, we didn’t think much of it. After about an hour, the power came back on, and we assumed everything was back to normal. Later in the day, we decided to take a short nap. But when we woke up, the power was out again.

Still, we weren’t too worried because power outages don’t usually last long, right? Well, this one did. Hours passed, and as the sun began to set, we realized we were going to spend the entire evening without electricity.

Eventually, our Airbnb host, Mario, messaged us to explain that there had been an issue related to nearby construction work. He told us the problem should be fixed within an hour. Unfortunately, that promise didn’t quite hold up. Darkness came, and we were still sitting in a completely powerless apartment.

But instead of letting it ruin our evening, we made the most of the situation. Mario kindly brought us candles, which helped create a surprisingly cozy atmosphere. With no lights, no Wi-Fi, and no distractions, we spent the evening talking, laughing, and enjoying the quiet, candlelit vibe.

Thankfully, by the next morning, the electricity was back, and everything returned to normal. It was definitely a different kind of evening, but also one we’ll probably remember for a long time.
